UK and US CPI inflation
A jump in commodity prices stoked a rise in prices for goods and services ranging from clothing and footwear to transport this year. The UK consumer prices index rose 11.1 per cent over the 12 months to the end of October, its highest level in 40 years and a more than five times the 2 per cent targeted by the Bank of England. In November, UK consumer prices eased to 9.3 per cent and there were even stronger indications in the United States that inflation had begun to moderate. The US consumer price index rose at an annual rate of 7.1 per cent, down from the 7.7 per cent increase recorded in October.
