SDG ‘Warriors’ Open Youth Forum With Advice for Building Better World

27.04.23 | Cuca Margoux

If the world really wants to step back from the brink, it had better “walk the walk” towards a more sustainable future for all, young speakers said on Tuesday, as thousands of their counterparts from across the world gathered, in person and online, for the opening of the annual Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum at UN Headquarters in New York.

Their call was answered by top UN officials.

“Our world needs you more than ever,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, in a video message for the event.

Organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the three day forum and its dozens of side events will elaborate on the 2023 theme of accelerating the global recovery from COVID-19 and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.

Empowering Women, Protecting The Earth

27.04.23 | Cuca Margoux

The climate crisis is not gender neutral.

As its impacts worsen, women and girls are experiencing unique and disproportionate harm—with the fallout amplifying existing gender inequalities. Typically more dependent on natural resources and disproportionately responsible for securing food, water and fuel, women are highly vulnerable to environmental shocks. They face heightened exposure to gender-based violence in the wake of conflict and instability exacerbated by climate change, and they are less likely to survive disasters. At the same time, their access to life-saving resources and to key decision-making spaces remains severely limited.

NEW YORK, 27 April 2023 – Around 90 per cent of adolescent girls and young women do not use the internet in low-income countries, while their male peers are twice as likely to be online, according to a new UNICEF analysis issued on International Day of Girls in ICT.

"Closing the digital divide between girls and boys is about more than just having access to the internet and technology. It's about empowering girls to become innovators, creators, and leaders," said UNICEF Director of Education Robert Jenkins. "If we want to tackle gender gaps in the labour market, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, we must start now by helping young people, especially girls, gain digital skills."

Where Did All The Women Go? The History of Women in Technology

27.04.23 | Cuca Margoux

Once women dominated the technology industry, now they’re few and far between. Salomé Bakpa, Global Content Marketing Manager, tms, discusses what happened.

Picture someone who works with computers or programming… what do they look like? Chances are an image of a slightly geeky, middle-aged man springs to mind. That’s not entirely unsurprising because in today’s world women make up less than a quarter of the global tech workforce and only 5% of leadership roles. However, it wasn’t always like this. In the early 20th century around 70% of the technology workforce was made up of women. So, what happened?

Dia Internacional das Raparigas nas TIC – A Realidade & Futuro em Portugal

27.04.23 | Cuca Margoux
