HR Needs to Take Digital Lead to Crack Flexible Working

31.03.22 | Cuca Margoux

If employers want to encourage more asynchronous work, and allow employees to plan their own hours outside the nine-to-five, HR has to get ahead on digital transformation.

Speaking at The Economist's 2022 Innovation@Work Global Week, Wagner Denuzzo, head of capabilities for the future of work at insurance firm Prudential Financial, argued that HR holds the key to take businesses to the next step.

He told HR magazine: "In the same way businesses transformed digitally 10 to 20 years ago, HR now has to be at the forefront of the next layer of what it means to be digital."

For Denuzzo, this means HR has to shift to a cloud-based employee management system as a minimum.

Here Are The Top 10 Times Scientific Imagination Failed

31.03.22 | Cuca Margoux

Sometimes scientists dismiss an idea if they can’t think of a way to test it.

Science, some would say, is an enterprise that should concern itself solely with cold, hard facts. Flights of imagination should be the province of philosophers and poets.

On the other hand, as Albert Einstein so astutely observed, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Knowledge, he said, is limited to what we know now, while “imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress.”

Preclinical Upper Limb Neurorobotic Platform to Assess, Rehabilitate, and Develop Therapies

31.03.22 | Cuca Margoux

Abstract

Numerous neurorehabilitative, neuroprosthetic, and repair interventions aim to address the consequences of upper limb impairments after neurological disorders. Although these therapies target widely different mechanisms, they share the common need for a preclinical platform that supports the development, assessment, and understanding of the therapy. Here, we introduce a neurorobotic platform for rats that meets these requirements. A four-degree-of-freedom end effector is interfaced with the rat’s wrist, enabling unassisted to fully assisted execution of natural reaching and retrieval movements covering the entire body workspace. Multimodal recording capabilities permit precise quantification of upper limb movement recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI), which allowed us to uncover adaptations in corticospinal tract neuron dynamics underlying this recovery. Personalized movement assistance supported early neurorehabilitation that improved recovery after SCI. Last, the platform provided a well-controlled and practical environment to develop an implantable spinal cord neuroprosthesis that improved upper limb function after SCI.

NASA Names Winners of Lunar Robotics Design Contest

31.03.22 | Cuca Margoux

NASA has chosen two students as winners of the Lunabotics Junior Contest, a national competition for K-12 students featuring the agency’s Artemis missions. Contestants were charged with designing a robot that can dig and move lunar soil, or regolith, from one area of the lunar South Pole to a holding container near a future Artemis Moon base.

Fifteen-year-old Shriya Sawant of Cumming, Georgia, was the winner from grades 6-12 with her RAD: Regolith Accretion Device design. Nine-year-old Lucia Grisanti from Toms River, New Jersey, won for grades K-5 with her design of Olympus. Each robot successfully accomplished the task of collecting and transporting regolith across rugged lunar terrain.
