Which Generation Equality Hero Are You?

01.07.21 | Cuca Margoux

Feminism means many different things to many people but what every feminist has in common is a belief in, and commitment to, equality. Generation Equality is uniting feminists and activists from different parts of the world, with different races, religions, ages, socioeconomic status, sexualities and gender expressions, to #ActforEqual.

Taking place in Paris, from 30 June – 2 July, the Generation Equality Forum will bring together governments, activists, private sector partners and youth, and leaders from every sector. Together, they will commit investments, programmes and policies that fast-track progress towards an equal future for all.

As we start our action journey, learn more about some of our feminist action heroes who make up Generation Equality. Which Generation Equality action hero do you support and aspire to be? Tell us how you're taking action for an equal future using #ActForEqual.

A War Photographer Looks Back at Her Life on The Road

01.07.21 | Cuca Margoux

Anastasia Taylor-Lind started life in caravans in southern England and ended up photographing women fighters in Kurdistan.

I grew up traveling. My dad was from inner-city London but had a dream of heading out to the countryside and living in a horse-drawn wagon.

I was born on the road in 1981 and spent my first few years of life traveling in southern England with my parents and our horses. Eventually, my parents bought a field in Devon where we lived in caravans [trailers].

Until I was 13 years old, we had no running water or electricity—so, obviously, no TV. But my dad was a great storyteller; I grew up engrossed in tales about his hippie-trail travels throughout Europe, America, and Asia. And my mom read children’s novels and poetry aloud to me every night at bedtime. Early on, I thought I might like to be a war poet when I grew up, like Siegfried Sassoon or Wilfred Owen.

‘Remain Vigilant’ Against Malicious Technologies That Could Imperil Future Generations

01.07.21 | Cuca Margoux

With over 4.6 billion internet users around the world, digital advances continue to revolutionize human life, but “we must remain vigilant” in the face of malicious technologies that “could imperil the security of future generations”, the head of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) told the Security Council on Tuesday.

“Digital technologies are increasingly straining existing legal, humanitarian and ethical norms, non-proliferation, international stability, and peace and security”, Izumi Nakamitsu warned the Estonian-led meeting, focused on peace and security in cyberspace.

Moreover, she continued, they are lowering access barriers and opening new potential domains for conflict – giving both State and non-State actors the ability to wage attacks, including across international borders.

Laurissilva, a Floresta-Relíquia na Ilha da Madeira

01.07.21 | Cuca Margoux
