The Sleep Habits That Can Improve Your Grades, According to a New Study

03.10.19 | Cuca Margoux

Jeffrey Grossman set out to study how exercise affects college students’ grades. What he found, instead, offers uniquely specific insight into the impact sleep has on academic performance.

Grossman, a professor of materials science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), asked 100 of his Introduction to Solid State Chemistry students to wear a Fitbit activity tracker for an entire semester. (Eighty-eight did.) He also worked with colleagues in MIT’s athletic department to create an exercise class—incorporating videos from his “hero,” “Insanity” creator Shaun T—that 22 of the students took throughout the semester. Grossman expected these students to perform better academically than their classmates—but after months of poring over the data, he says, an association just wasn’t there.

O Futuro do Trabalho: (re)Qualificar

03.10.19 | Cuca Margoux

Eat Less Red Meat, Scientists Said. Now Some Believe That Was Bad Advice.

03.10.19 | Cuca Margoux

Public health officials for years have urged Americans to limit consumption of red meat and processed meats because of concerns that these foods are linked to heart disease, cancer and other ills.

But on Monday, in a remarkable turnabout, an international collaboration of researchers produced a series of analyses concluding that the advice, a bedrock of almost all dietary guidelines, is not backed by good scientific evidence.

If there are health benefits from eating less beef and pork, they are small, the researchers concluded. Indeed, the advantages are so faint that they can be discerned only when looking at large populations, the scientists said, and are not sufficient to tell individuals to change their meat-eating habits.

How Best to Behead a Mosquito

03.10.19 | Cuca Margoux

Engineer Russell Taylor and a group of students design a device to make it easier for biotech company Sanaria to develop a malaria vaccine.

If you've ever spent a summer barbecue clumsily clapping at the air in an effort to avoid itchy, swollen bug bites, you know smashing a mosquito isn't easy. And if crushing the tiny insect between human hands is difficult, imagine the task of carefully removing its head and extracting its salivary glands.

03.10.19 | Cuca Margoux

On 25 September, at an event of the Women, Peace and Security Focal Points Network during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, ministers, heads of regional organizations, focal points on women, peace and security and civil society representatives called for urgent action to secure women’s equal and meaningful participation in peace processes.

The WPS Focal Points Network is a cross-regional forum for governments and regional organizations, which collaborates with UN agencies and civil society to advance the implementation of the Security Council resolutions on women, peace and security.

The meeting was hosted by Namibia, as current Chair of the WPS Focal Points Network, in collaboration with Germany, Canada, Uruguay and UN Women.

In her opening remarks, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of Namibia, recalled the outcomes of the third annual capital-level meeting of the Network and noted the need to “improve information-sharing between regional organizations and to integrate early warning systems for conflict prevention into regional frameworks to enhance effective preparedness and responses.” She announced that Namibia will establish an International Women’s Peace Center in Windhoek in 2020.
